Joint Replacement

What is joint replacement?

Whether your hip or knee problems have been caused by a sports-related injury, a condition related to aging, or an accident, our joint replacement team at Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) provides comprehensive care to help improve your quality of life, range of motion and mobility.

Our surgeons are trained to screen, test, diagnose and provide treatment for hip and knee problems, which may include joint-replacement surgery.

Knee or hip replacements are surgical procedures where a damaged or diseased joint surface is removed and replaced with an artificial unit (prosthesis). Your Primary Care physician may suggest such surgery if you have knee or hip diseases that are causing extreme pain or soreness, and restricting your movement or mobility.

Joint replacement is one of the most common – and sought-after – types of prosthetic joint surgeries in the region. Recent technological and biological advances have created predictable and successful outcomes.

Joint replacement for network registered (MDF) patients

Did you know that Saudi Aramco employees and their dependents, who are registered with a JHAH network provider (MDF), can request to have their joint replacement surgery performed at JHAH?

Do you want to know more? You can request a call-back from our team and we will walk you through the process and eligibility criteria.

What to expect from joint replacement

You will receive confirmation of your Orthopedic Clinic appointment by SMS and/or email. If you need to cancel or reschedule, use MyChart or call 800-305-4444 at least 24 hours before your appointment.

Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment and go directly to the reception area to check in/register. Within five minutes, a member of our nursing staff will carry out a physical assessment and check your medical history with you. You will then have a wait of around 20 to 30 minutes before meeting your surgeon.

Your meeting with the surgeon will last about 20 minutes, and will give us a chance to talk through how things will progress, and set out a personalized treatment plan. We may be able to provide a diagnosis at this first visit, but additional testing is often needed.

Some tests can be done on the same day, while others might need a separate appointment or special preparation. Before you leave, the team will give you detailed instructions about what will happen next. If you need surgery, your surgeon will arrange it.

A few weeks before surgery, you will be scheduled for a preadmission visit to assess your condition and talk through what will happen before, during and after surgery. This visit will last about 20 minutes. Feel free to ask questions and request any information. If needed, you will also be invited to meet with the anesthesiologist, who will perform a further assessment.

You will receive a call from the pre-operation nursing team 24 hours before your surgery, to assess your health and confirm the procedure. If you need to cancel surgery, please inform the pre-operation nurse as soon as possible, to give others a chance to receive treatment in your slot.

You should fast and only drink clear liquids (such as water, fruit juice without pulp, carbonated drinks, and tea without milk) for eight hours prior to checking in. Stop drinking two hours before surgery. Your doctor will discuss with you whether you need to stop taking any medication before surgery, and you should bring all medication with you. Shower and wear clean, comfortable clothes before coming to the operation. Do not bring any valuables. If you are a same-day admission patient, you will be transferred to the inpatient ward.

Following your operation, your drip and any drains (if used) will usually be removed within 24 hours. You will then be able to start walking on the same day of surgery, or the first post-operative day, first with a frame and soon with crutches or sticks. If your surgeon feels that everything is going well, you could be going home within a few days.

Story at JHAH | Hip Replacement

Our patients say it best

I took my father to JHAH for a hip replacement, and want to thank the staff – medical and clerical. A special mention to the pre-op team, whose patient-liaison skills were superb.
