Pulmonology

What is pulmonology?

If you are suffering from shortness of breath, chest pains, sleep problems, or a persistent or troublesome cough, you may be referred to our Pulmonary Clinic by your Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) Primary Care physician. Our pulmonology experts will carry out thorough checks to rule out any lung disorders, or a work-related lung disease. If you need treatment, you can be confident that our specialists will be there every step of the way, with state-of-the-art diagnostic evaluations and a wide range of outpatient treatments.

Pulmonology treatments, services and procedures

Asthma

Managing asthma is not always as simple as using an inhaler. Our skilled Asthma Clinic doctors, nurses and support staff understand the challenges that this condition can present. We offer a full array of treatments, including cutting-edge therapies, such as Xolair. But treatment is just one aspect of care – we also provide education and support, so that you can learn how to better manage your asthma by yourself.

Interstitial lung disease / pulmonary fibrosis

If you have been diagnosed with interstitial lung disease, we provide a diagnostic work-up to identify the cause. We will then recommend treatment options, depending on the cause, and carefully monitor disease activity and any treatment side-effects.

Lung nodules

Should you be worried about your lung health, you will want information and support as quickly as possible. Our specialists are experts in the evaluation and treatment of nodules (small masses of tissue in the lung) caused by lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mesothelioma, thymoma, tracheal tumors and other diseases.

Pulmonary hypertension

Left untreated, pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs) can have serious consequences. The first step to successful treatment is an expert diagnosis. At our Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic, we will thoroughly evaluate your overall lung health and your symptoms. We begin with a range of non-invasive tests, including chest X-rays, pulmonary function tests, echocardiograms, sleep studies, CT scanning/angiograms, ventilation/perfusion scanning and comprehensive blood testing.

What to expect from pulmonology

When arranging an appointment, we will make sure that you see one of our experienced pulmonologists. Our expert team will look after you every step of the way – from giving advice at your first consultation, through to offering ongoing support if any treatment is required.

We work closely with chest radiologists, thoracic surgeons, pulmonary pathologists and other specialists to provide definitive diagnoses and therapeutic options across the spectrum of pulmonary medicine.

As our Pulmonary Clinic is not a self-referral service, your Primary Care physician will arrange an appointment for you if they believe an expert should evaluate your lung condition. When you arrive at the Pulmonary Clinic you will be checked in, and within five minutes a nurse will call you for an initial clinical screening.

The wait time to see your pulmonary consultant will be about 15 to 20 minutes, and your appointment will last around 20 to 30 minutes. Depending on your condition, additional imaging procedures or laboratory tests may be required. This will be explained by our nursing team, so please ask any questions. All appointments can be arranged by the clinic team.

Testing how well your lungs are functioning helps us to understand your respiratory health. Our state-of-the-art laboratory is equipped to measure all aspects of your lung functions and exercise capacity. We perform spirometry, lung volumes, diffusing capacity and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Our laboratory operates according to American Thoracic Society standards. It provides accurate, high-quality data to measure and assess your lung function, evaluate functional limitation and shortness of breath, and uncover the cause of respiratory symptoms – all in a friendly, comfortable environment.

We all need a good night’s sleep to stay in optimum emotional and physical health. That is why we provide exceptional care at our adult Sleep Clinic. If you suffer from insomnia, sleep apnea, a movement disorder such as restless legs syndrome, or are experiencing one of many other sleep-related issues, our skilled staff will evaluate and treat your condition.

We offer the latest in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, all in one state-of-the-art facility, with the capacity for overnight sleep studies and evaluation. Depending on your unique needs, we may see you for a one-time visit or on an ongoing basis – whatever it takes to help you sleep more soundly.

Flexible bronchoscopy is a common procedure used to determine the causes of abnormal chest X-rays and chest CAT scans, or to treat an existing problem. It can also be used to perform different kinds of biopsies – including lung biopsy and lymph node biopsy – and check for cancers.

If you are dealing with breathing problems such as a narrowing of the trachea or bronchi, bronchoscopy can help diagnose the cause, and determine appropriate treatment.

Prior to the procedure, you will receive an anesthetic (usually in the form of a spray) to numb your nose and throat. A small flexible tube, with a small camera at its tip, is placed in the nose or mouth and then pushed slowly down the back of the throat, through the vocal cords and into the airways. Pictures are displayed on a video screen or camera to enable the team to see what is happening.

Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is a minimally invasive, but highly effective, procedure used to diagnose lung cancer, infections, and other diseases causing enlarged lymph nodes in the chest. During an endobronchial ultrasound, your physician will insert a thin, hollow needle into your lymph nodes – using a bronchoscope inserted through the mouth – and take a small sample. No incisions are necessary.

Following your care, and depending on your specific treatment, you will have follow-up appointments. If you need to go through recovery sessions, you can be confident that our team will be there to offer you care and support.
