Colon cancer screening is a vital step in catching the disease early when it is most treatable. Early detection not only improves your chances of survival but also allows for a treatment plan that is often less aggressive, minimizing disruption to your daily life.

JHAH Recommendations for Colon Cancer Screening

JHAH strongly recommends that men and women aged 45-74 undergo annual stool testing for colon cancer screening.

High-Risk Individuals Should Begin Earlier:

  • Family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
  • Personal history of inflammatory bowel disease
  • Known hereditary syndrome (Lynch syndrome, FAP)
  • Personal history of colorectal polyps or cancer

Why Annual Stool Tests Matter

An annual stool test is one of the simplest and most effective ways to detect colon cancer early. The test checks for blood in your stool, which can be an early sign of colon cancer. However, it's important to remember that blood in the stool doesn't automatically mean cancer. It could be caused by other conditions such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or inflammatory bowel disease. Regardless, if blood is present, it’s crucial to know so you can take the necessary next steps.

At JHAH, we recommend an annual stool test for everyone over the age of 45. This annual test is a simple yet powerful tool in the fight against colon cancer. If you have a family history of colon cancer, your doctor may suggest beginning screenings earlier than 45.

Screening Methods

Our screening methods are designed to detect colon cancer early, often before symptoms appear.

There are three methods available at Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) for colon cancer screening.

This is a non-invasive test that should be done annually.

Our genitourinary pathologists offer:

  • Expert diagnosis of prostate biopsies
  • Gleason grading
  • Surgical pathology assessment
  • Molecular marker analysis
  • Second opinion reviews

A procedure where a camera is passed into the colon. This is an invasive test and should be repeated every 10 years.

What to Expect:

  • Bowel preparation the day before
  • Sedation during the procedure
  • 30-60 minute procedure
  • Recovery time of 1-2 hours
  • Return to normal activities the next day

All three methods (colonoscopy, stool tests, and Specialized CT Colonography) are effective when done regularly. The best test is the one that gets done.
