Dr. Majid Al Othman, Unit Head of Radiation Oncology at Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH), discusses his work, inspirations, and highlights from his career.
A passion for science and a desire to help people during their most vulnerable moments. Seeing loved ones battle illness showed me the profound impact a doctor can have. Medicine offers the perfect balance of intellectual challenge and human connection.
Oncology allows me to combine cutting-edge science with compassionate care to make a real difference. Radiation oncology offers state-of-the-art precision in treatment while preserving quality of life. Helping patients through their journey, whether for cure or comfort, is deeply fulfilling.
I love seeing patients regain hope and strength, knowing that our work gives them more time with loved ones. The relationships I build with patients and their families are incredibly meaningful. Witnessing resilience in the face of adversity inspires me every day.
I treated a 13-year-old girl for an advanced cancer. She had a dire prognosis — but eventually became cancer-free. She returned to the hospital at the age of 26 with her newborn baby, to thank our team. Seeing her joy and knowing we helped reclaim her hope for life was incredibly moving.
My day starts early, often reviewing imaging scans and treatment plans to ensure precision in radiation delivery. I then meet with new patients to discuss their diagnoses and treatment options. I also see current patients to monitor their responses to treatment and address any side-effects.
Then there are multidisciplinary tumor board meetings with medical oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, and radiologists. I also stay engaged with the latest research and advancements in radiation therapy. It’s a demanding field but knowing that my work has a direct impact on saving lives and alleviating suffering makes every challenge worthwhile.
